Ten years ago we - architect Henry and film producer Sally - decided to change our lives. We bought a sailing boat in Greece and set off to sail the Mediterranean. We have visited hundreds of glorious Greek islands, and although we loved them all, they were almost always spoilt by mass tourism.
And then we arrived in Lesvos, the Greek island to completely captivate our hearts and minds. The astonishing blue of the sea contrasts with the green of the mountains and valleys. Ancient olive groves with stone terraces twist and turn over the land and old brick olive oil chimneys break the skyline in sea and mountain villages where production still continues. The smell of anise permeates the air wherever the many factories distil ouzo for export and to supply the thousands of small Kafeneons scattered around the island, all this making Lesvos an island that exists for its own worth, not relying on tourism. Sit in a café and drink ouzo or coffee with the old men and watch authentic Greek life go by, much like it has gone by for hundreds of years, even if a little frayed around the edges.
The beautiful beaches are said to be amongst the best in all of Greece, sea food caught fresh from the two gulfs is sublime and inexpensive, wildflowers are in abundance, migrating birds pause on the edges of the lakes on their way north or south, and the mountains and valleys offer a paradise for hikers.
So, it was not surprising that we decided that this was where we wanted to buy a house – something simple but beautiful, surrounded by olives, oranges mountains and sea. Philoxenia Secret Escape in Plomari is that house – a house that dreams are made of.
