Discover Lesvos

Ten years ago we - architect Henry and film producer Sally - decided to change our lives. We bought a sailing boat in Greece and set off to sail the Mediterranean. We have visited hundreds of glorious Greek islands, and although we loved them all, they were almost always spoilt by mass tourism.

And then we arrived in Lesvos, the Greek island to completely captivate our hearts and minds. The astonishing blue of the sea contrasts with the green of the mountains and valleys. Ancient olive groves with stone terraces twist and turn over the land and old brick olive oil chimneys break the skyline in sea and mountain villages where production still continues. The smell of anise permeates the air wherever the many factories distil ouzo for export and to supply the thousands of small Kafeneons scattered around the island, all this making Lesvos an island that exists for its own worth, not relying on tourism. Sit in a café and drink ouzo or coffee with the old men and watch authentic Greek life go by, much like it has gone by for hundreds of years, even if a little frayed around the edges.

The beautiful beaches are said to be amongst the best in all of Greece, sea food caught fresh from the two gulfs is sublime and inexpensive, wildflowers are in abundance, migrating birds pause on the edges of the lakes on their way north or south, and the mountains and valleys offer a paradise for hikers.

So, it was not surprising that we decided that this was where we wanted to buy a house – something simple but beautiful, surrounded by olives, oranges mountains and sea. Philoxenia Secret Escape in Plomari is that house – a house that dreams are made of.

  • "This is a charming and delightful find in the very sweet village of Plomari on Lesvos Island. The accommodation is fresh, bright and comfortable without being fussy. The garden setting was a surprise... it's a very traditional village garden with a collection of olive, orange and other orchard trees. The oranges were hanging on the branches so we took full advantage and had loads of fresh orange juice every day. Plomari village itself is a delight... wandering through the cobble streets down to the taverna's and the beach was delightful. Somehow, there is a very local yet welcoming air to to this village - I thoroughly enjoyed it. All in all, a great stay... only snag was the slightly uphill walk back from the village to the house - not that it is difficult in any way - just that I am lazy! Clearly, though my body needed the walk, because even after a short stay, I feel refreshed. Would definitely come back for longer."

  • "We were already guests in May 2021 and 23 and also spent some beautiful spring days there this year. That would actually be all said. The old farmhouse has been lovingly converted into a cottage by Henry and Sally without losing its original character. It is surrounded by olive and orange groves overlooking the Sedountas River Valley. It is a perfect place to relax and unwind. The center of Plomari is a 15-minute walk down. The small, lively harbor town with some remarkable architecture has not yet fallen victim to the ubiquitous tourism business. We just love strolling through the winding alleys, exploring the small shops or enjoying the colorful hustle and bustle of everyday life with a glass of wine at one of the cafes or restaurants on the harbor promenade or downtown. There are also charming hiking trails and inviting swimming coves in the area."

  • "This cottage is simple but heavenly. It's been decorated in a fresh light Greek style but with every modern thing provided. An absolute treat to take a shower with the windows wide open directly onto the garden with the view of ancient amphorae and lemon trees. Bliss to sit on the deck with a view of the private Orange and Olive groves. Better still drink the sweetest freshly squeezed orange juice for breakfast or lunch on the deck. The position of the cottage is private and peaceful and makes one feel as if one has gone back in time. I wish we had booked a longer stay, as its the perfect place to relax and unwind."

  • "Everything about the house and the facilities was amazing! One of the best Airbnb experiences we had. The house is located on a serene hill and has a nice garden in front. It is obviously furnished with great taste. Dina and her daughter who helped us check in were always super communicative, friendly and helpful as well. We’d definitely recommend staying here to anyone coming to Lesbos!"
